When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register if your taxable turnover over the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold if it suits your business.

What if I go over the threshold by mistake?

If your turnover goes over £90,000 only temporarily, you can ask HMRC for an exception from registration. Otherwise you must register within 30 days of the end of the month you went over.

Should I register voluntarily?

It can help if your customers are VAT‑registered businesses or you buy a lot of standard‑rated goods. We compare the cash effect for you.
