When is the Self Assessment deadline?

Online returns are due by 31 January after the end of the tax year, which is also when any tax you owe must be paid. Paper returns are due by 31 October.

Do I need to file a tax return?

Usually yes if you’re self‑employed, a landlord, or have income that hasn’t been taxed at source, such as larger amounts of dividends or savings income. The rules are detailed, so we’ll confirm what applies to you.

How does Making Tax Digital change Self Assessment?

Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 now keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC. The threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.
