Who needs to follow Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have had to follow MTD since 6 April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
Does MTD count my rent before or after expenses?
Before. Qualifying income is your total gross income from property and self‑employment. If it is over the threshold, MTD applies even if your profit is much lower.
How quickly do I report a property sale?
If you are UK resident and sell a UK residential property with Capital Gains Tax to pay, you must report and pay within 60 days of completion.
Should I hold property in a limited company?
It can suit some landlords, especially higher‑rate taxpayers who are building a portfolio, but moving existing property can trigger Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax. We model both routes with your numbers first.
